In 1987, Dr. G. A. Ilizarov had visited India and gave few talks on his method at K.E.M Hospital, Mumbai. Everyone present there was mesmerised by his talks. Dr. G S Kulkarni had been to USA to attend American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon's(AAOS) meet in 1989. Dr. Dror Paley gave few talks on Ilizarov methodology. Dr. G S Kulkarni showed his keen interest in ilizarov methodology in front of Dr. Dror Paley, Dr. G S Kulkarni was invited by Dr. Dror Paley to stay in his home, he stayed there in Dr. Dror’s house for 15 days and got inspired and motivated much by the beauty of this methodology, On returning to India he contacted various implant companies to develop Ilizarov implant as he has seen there in USA, Pitkar took the interest and they have developed the implant.
Dr. Milind Chaudhary and Dr. Presham Shah from Mumbai had already started using Ilizarov methodology in India, even before Dr. G S Kulkarni.
Dr. GS Kulkarni requested Dr. K.T Dholokia, to conduct an Ilizarov conference in Bombay hospital. He readily agreed. In 1990 we had first Ilizarov conference in Mumbai at Bombay Hospital auditorium. Dr. Dror Paley was the chief guest and he conducted the meeting for 3 days. It was attended by around 350 delegates from all over India. At the same meeting 'ASAMI, India' was Formed. Dr. K T Dholakia become the 1st president and Dr G S Kulkarni was the first secretory of ASAMI India.

Then Dr. H.R Jhunjhunwala and R.A Agarwal joined ASAMI India. Dr. R.A Agarwal had been to Kurgon and established friendship with Kurgon Group. Almost every year they used to come India, stay with him in Gorakhpur and did surgeries and conducted courses.
They used to attend International ASAMI meet in large numbers. Dr. H.R Jhunjhunwala became the president of ASAMI India in 1998. He became the President of ASAMI International in 2012 at the Greece International Conference. In 2014 he very ably conducted ASAMI International conference in Goa which was one of the best conferences.
So far ASAMI India has travelled a long way, The past Presidents of this August Organisation were Dr. K T Dholakia, Dr. G S Kulkarni, Dr. H R Jhunjhunwala, Dr. Milind Chaudhary, Dr. R A Agrawal, Dr. Harshad M Shah, Dr. Manish Dhawan.
The Past Secretaries were Dr. G S Kulkarni, Dr. H R Jhunjhunwala, Dr. Mangal Parihar, Dr. Suhas Shah, Dr. Manish Dhawan, Dr. Rajat Agrawal.
